Thrifted Reiss

In America, a flapper has always been a giddy, attractive and unconventional young thing who, in Mencken's words, 'was a somewhat foolish girl, full of wild surmises and inclined to revolt against the precepts and admonitions of her elders.'
-Dictionary of Word and Phrase Origins

For a Christmas party last night, I pulled out one of my favorite dresses - a thrifted Reiss dress, with a bit of a flapper girl vibe.  I found it at the ever inspiring Brick Lane market, for one steal of a deal.  It's an XL, but I do love the oversized look, which helps to hint at the roaring twenties.

Street Chic at Notting Hill Carnival

My time in London made me realize how much I love living in the bay area, but fairly often there are days, like Monday, that I wish I was a short drive instead of a long (and expensive!) flight away.

The Notting Hill Carnival is a giant street parade in (you guessed it) Notting Hill, and in typical London style, street fashion was out of control.  Here are some of my favorites:

In Love With: Triyoga

I don't think I quite realized how long five weeks away from home would be, especially given that a little more than two of them would be spent completely on my own. It's been really wonderful for me, as I have had the busiest year of my life with almost no time for myself - and now that's all I have! One of my goals for this trip was to try and center myself mentally, physically, and spiritually, so of course I joined a yoga studio. There's nothing like yoga to align all three of those things for me.

After a Google search and recommendations from my soon to be yoga-instructor sister, I found Triyoga in Chelsea. They had a great £20 for two week deal, which is perfect! I've been to three classes so far, one restorative, one Kundalini, and one Yin class, and they have been heaven sent, honestly. I haven't done much yoga in my life, but I think just based on my happiness factor after I've walked out of both classes, this studio is absolutely worth a try.

From their website: "The principle was to honour the tradition of yoga and create the sense that you were entering a sacred space. We wanted to dispel the illusion about who can practise yoga because it is for everyone – hence, ‘everyone triyoga'."

If you're ever in London and need some time to center yourself, absolutely go to Triyoga.

Vintage London

Today I went over to Primrose Hill for the Vintage Fashion London Fair. I wasn't totally sure what to expect, given that I don't often shop vintage and I found out about the event through Twitter, but I thought I'd give it a go! The event was at Cecil Sharp House, an old musty building, in a very quaint part of Primrose Hill. The actual fair was quite small, just one room, but it had a very nice selection of everything from the 1920's and on.

They had some beautiful pieces, and half the dresses looked like they came straight out of Mad Men.  Vintage clothing definitely keeps with my second hand shopping goals so I think I'll start keeping my eye out for good vintage places in San Francisco!

Tibits

I have had some amazing food in London, but Tibits, where I had lunch today, absolutely takes the cake. Its a vegetarian buffet style restaurant off of Regent Street, so it's a little pricey, but absolutely worth it. I had an assortment of fruit, cooked veggies, tofu, rice, and potato wedges with orange and blackcurrant juice. Yum. I think I'll be coming back here quite often.

London Town

I go to London, my favorite city in the world, and I feel at home. -Boris Becker.

Our first 24 hours in London have been great! Julia and I wandered our way through Covent Garden and ate some amazing food at the market.  We had dessert at Laduree (duh), and then finished the evening off with some window shopping at Topshop! A successful day battling jet lag.

There were telephone booths like this all around town for some sort of exhibition.  London is so supportive of the arts - it's what I like most about the city I think.

Of course we immediately found Laduree.

Now we're off to Newcastle! Stay tuned!
