DIY Boot Socks

Given the unbelievable cold weather, I've taken to unusual precautions to bundle up.  I was inspired by a post I saw on Pinterest to attempt a go at making boot socks out of old sweaters.  Here's my take on the DIY project!

Step 1: Find a sweater you feel ok cutting up.  I found this wool one at Goodwill for a couple bucks.

Step 2: Cut off the sleeves.  Be sure to make them longer than you think they should be - it's better to have to cut off more than be stuck with socks that could stick out of your boots in the back.

Voila!  I'm in love.  They're ridiculously warm, being wool and all, and look lovely.

Rosy Cheeks

At a recent rummage sale I found this romper...

Not only do I not have the body type to pull off rompers (believe me, I've tried), but this one is pretty ugly too, let's be real.  I loved the pattern though (I'm a total sucker for the English rose look), and thought it would be a shame to let it go to waste.  I figured, if I get rid of the top half, these would make pretty decent DIY pj shorts!

Here they are!  It took about two minutes to rip the seam and cut off the buttons at the pockets.  Comfy and lovely as can be!

Project Make My Own Bambi and Manson Shorts

Well, I wanted to give it a go at making my own Bambi and Manson style shorts.  I really can't shell out $90 on shorts, plus I'm still sticking to my New Year's Resolution of only buying second hand clothes, so within seconds of looking at their website, this turned into a DIY project.

Step 1:  Find some $4 high rise jean shorts from Goodwill.  I got a pair of Levi's and a pair of Ralph Laurens.

Step 2:  Shred them apart.  I ripped the seams, took sandpaper, a cheese grater, a knife and scissors to get the right distressed look.  This is messy -  I would recommend doing this outside.  The fuzz (especially from sandpapering) gets everywhere!  There was a lot of vacuuming when I was done.

Step 3:  Bleach.  I used straight bleach and put it in a squirt bottle, soaked a wash cloth in it, and just dunked it on my shorts with a spoon.  Although side note - I've heard metal has a bad reaction with bleach (not sure if this is true or not, but better safe than sorry) so I used plastic measuring spoons.  I think a squirt bottle looks the best, but the hard thing about bleach (or dye in general) is that is bleeds a lot once applied, so it's really hard to get small bleach dots like the ones at Bambi and Manson.  Then after letting it soak for about 10 minutes (don't leave it on too long - it can eat away the actual fabric) I washed it.

Step 4:  The color!  I used an old hair dye bottle to apply the dye.  I bought Rit Dye in fushia, purple, and teal from Michaels for really cheap, like $3 a bottle, and it worked like a charm.  I let the color sit on the fabric for about a half hour before washing the shorts.  It holds the color through the first wash pretty well - I was really nervous about it totally fading, but it turned out really vibrant and exactly the shades I intended it to be!

Pair #1:
I tried for a half and half look, half acid wash fushia, half acid wash purple.  It's kind of hard to see in these pics, but it looks so sick.  If I had a clothing line, I would entitle these shorts "The Pursuit of Happiness" like the MGMT/Ratatat/Kid Cudi song.

Pair #2:
These took a lot less effort than the above as the dye was straightforward - I literally just poured on the dye where I wanted it and it turned out great! These shorts had an extra step too, as you can see.  I bought some studs on eBay and put them on myself - it's SO easy.  It took me about 15 minutes to pop them all on.

I call these the "Surfer Girl" shorts (yes, like the Beach Boys song.  I'm sensing a trend here.)

Bambi and Manson

I've gotten really obsessed with funky jean shorts lately... and stumbled across this amazing line, Bambi and Manson, that literally make the jean shorts of my dreams.  They take old Levi's and custom make them to be amazing.  I think I'm going to make this a DIY project first before I splurge around $80 on a pair of these... I stopped by the dependable Goodwill the other day and picked up a pair of old Levi's for $4.  Lovely.

These are my favorites...

Beach Bums

Blacked out Beach Bums

I think I'll end up doing some sort of combination of the above.

Buttons and Bows

I've been really good about shopping second hand.  I've only broken it once on this adorable dress...

The other day I scored an awesome find at Goodwill - this grey wool skirt, for only $5!  However, one of the buttons was missing.  Sad day.  So instead of going out and buying new buttons, I decided to reuse some from an old shirt that's way too small and I'll never wear again.

Old shirt:

New buttons!  The shirts a dark purple and the skirts dark grey, so I like the color combo.  It adds a little funk to an otherwise straight laced skirt.

I had all this extra fabric, and I've been wanting to make a big hair bow for forever, so viola!

Oh the success of second hand shopping.

I still struggle with my attempts at being one less person to contribute to the demand of clothes made by companies that use sweatshops, don't pay a living wage, and aren't environmentally friendly.  It seems to be the easy way out - so until I can figure out something maybe a little more impactful, I'll just continue down this road.
