Kate's Ethical Fashion Favorite

As an Anglophile, I'm understandably a huge follower of Kate Middleton's wardrobe.  She's always been a fan of recycling outfits and buying second hand, which is 90% why I have such a high appreciation for her style.  Little did I know, one of the designers she's worn was born out of a passion for ending human trafficking!  The Evening Standard wrote an article about it...

I love when two of my worlds collide - my love of clothing and my work with human trafficking prevention!  Here's to hoping they remain committed to helping women who have been trafficked find employment, even with their move to East London.

Kate Middleton: Fashion Recycler

Now I won't feel the least bit weird about wearing the same thing three days in a row.  Hah.

She wore that darling little Emilia Wickstead dress at the Queen's Garden Party and the Queen's Sovereign Luncheon recently...

Oh Harry.  Please don't bore us with your stories.

Why yes, I'm making wearing the same thing twice fashionable.  You're welcome.

Girl Stole My Dress

Oh Kate Middleton, I worship you and your fashion sense (stress on the word sense) but my hopes of ever owning my dream dress - the gorgeous Jenny Peckham number you wore at the Royal Albert Hall - have been forever thwarted. It seems only yesterday I was emailing my friends a picture of the wonder that is that dress, which I was determined would eventually be mine. Sadly, now that you have rocked the dress better than I could ever hope to, there is no chance in hell I will ever get my hands on this dress. You see, once you wear something, it sells out immediately, and remains forever out of my budget even on eBay.  Triste.

Don't hate me because I'm beautiful.

Kate Out and About

The Duchess of Cambridge has been out of the spotlight for a while - but much to my delight these past few days have been busy for her, meaning new lovely outfits!

In Amanda Wakely at the Imperial War Museum for a fundraiser - this museum is now definitely on my list to visit for my upcoming trip to London.

Her hair! I love it.

In Rebecca taylor for a reception honoring the Scott-Amundsen Centenary Race to the South Pole.

And my favorite outfit - Kate wears Matthew Williamson for the premiere of African Cats in London.

She always looks so tasteful, timeless, and classy.

The Goddess that is Kate Middleton

I've been really contemplating lately how fashion interacts with feminism.  If women are seen more objectively, and more often judged on their bodies than men are, then what role do clothes play in how women present themselves?  Part of me wants to say just screw it - who is allowed to give a damn about what I wear.  But in reality, clothes are a very important part of how you present yourself to the world.  Greta Christina, in her blog, writes that: "It is the height of irony that women are valued for our looks, encouraged to make ourselves beautiful and ornamental... and are then derided as shallow and vain for doing so."

It's a sad truth that appearance, not intellect, is what women are judged on.  That said, I think fashion can be incredibly empowering for women.  Maybe it's a learned behavior, but when I wear an outfit where I present myself as a professional member of society and still expressing my inner style, I feel like I can take on the world.  Here are a few quick reads that address feminism and fashion...

I definitely don't have an answer - I think something like this really depends on each individual woman and why she wears what she wears.  Like Gloria Steinham says - "Is she doing it because she wants to? Is she body-proud?  Is she sexuality proud? Because then, I say, great.  Is she doing it because she feels she has to?  That she won't be popular otherwise?  Then, that's wrong."

What does this have to do with Kate Middleton, you ask?  I've come to respect her fashion sense immensely.  As a representation of her family, government, and country, she dresses so well - classy, conservative, but still feminine and stylish.  I think she balances her feminine power with her professional power.

Her Royal Highness

For the past two weeks Kate Middleton and that guy she's married to toured Canada and LA, which was really just an excuse for her to show off her mad fashion sense.  I'll hand it to her, girl knows how to work her clothes.  She always picks the most flattering cuts and silhouettes, and consistently looked put together.  It also helps that her waist is the size of my wrist.  I do wish she had been a bit more daring, but as one of her first official outings as a Duchess, I think her choice of a conservative, polished look was well thought out.

Some of my favorite outfits:

Why yes, I've brought sleeves back. You're welcome darlings.

Oh my, this isn't a red carpet!

Darling,  you mean I'm supposed to touch this?

Oh yes, posing with random objects comes with the job, you know.

Tell me again darling, why are we in Canada?
